The planet Neptune was discovered on Sept. 23, 1846. Neptune’s cloud cover has an incredible blue tint. The blue tint is somewhat due to its unidentified compound and the result of the absorption of red light by methane in the planets atmosphere. Neptunes atmosphere is made mostly up of hydrogen and helium. Neptune has 13 moons. These moons are named after lesser sea gods and nymphs from Greek mythology. Neptune itself was named after the Roman god of the sea. Triton is Neptunes largest moon. Triton is not like the other moons because its the only large moon in the solar system to circle its planet in a direction opposite to the planets rotational path. Neptune is a planet that has rings. The rings on Neptune are made up of mostly dust. The rings on Neptune are very unstable. The Planet is thought to be about 25 percent rock, 60-70 percent ice, and 5 to 15 percent hydrogen and helium. Neptune is about 2.8 billion miles from the sun.
